Eclipse Ibiza 2026: Walk to the Best Spot With Nests
On Wednesday 12 August 2026, the Sun goes out over Ibiza. Not a partial, not "almost" — the whole island sits inside the path of totality, and for about a minute the corona will hang over the sea while the horizon glows in every direction at once.
We're not letting that happen alone in a car park. Both our Ibiza hostels are walking out together to watch it, and you're invited.
The plan
15:00
The Flamingo by Nest group leaves Es Canar and heads over to Sant Antoni. Early on purpose — traffic control across the island tightens from mid-morning.
18:00
Everyone leaves Cisne by Nest together, on foot. No cars, no parking, no checkpoints.

First contact. The Moon takes its first bite out of the Sun. Glasses on.

Totality. Glasses off. Roughly one minute.

Totality ends, diamond ring, glasses back on immediately.

The Sun sets while still partly eclipsed. It goes down as a crescent.
After dark
Fire show and the rest of the night together. It's a new Moon, so the Perseids peak overhead with nothing to wash them out.
Why we're walking
This is the part most people are going to get wrong on the day.
The best-known viewing spots on the west coast are behind vehicle checkpoints on 12 August. Access gets cut at fixed points on the roads in:
Cala d'Hort — at the Cala Vedella / Cala d'Hort junction, km 4.3
Platges de Comte — from km 4.5 of the EI-701
Cala Molí — at the Cala Molí / Cala Tarida junction, km 3.6
Cala Bassa — from the EI-702 / Cala Bassa junction, km 1.9
Not one of those checkpoints is on our route. We walk out of the hostel door and we're there. While everyone else is parked up on a verge working out how far they still have to go, we'll already have a spot.
Where we're going
The Balearic Government has designated six official observation zones in Ibiza, picked for clear sightlines, access and emergency cover. Two of them are walkable from Cisne — and they're the two with the longest totality of the six:

Formentera has two more official zones: S'Estany des Peix (~46 sec) and Es Arenals (~45 sec).
We'll call the final spot a couple of days before, once we've had a proper look at the forecast — if cloud is coming in from one direction, we want the freedom to move. Follow Nest Hostel on Insta and we'll post the call on Stories.
Eclipse times in Ibiza
All times CEST. Ibiza sits near the southern edge of the path of totality, which is why totality is short here — the trade-off is that the Sun is only about 3° above the horizon, so you get the corona sitting right on top of the Mediterranean.

Your eyes, seriously
You need glasses certified to ISO 12312-2 — check for the CE mark and EN ISO 12312-2:2015 printed on the frame. Wear them from 19:38 right up to the moment totality starts, and put them straight back on the second the diamond ring reappears at 20:34.
Sunglasses don't work. Neither do stacked sunglasses, phone screens, smoked glass or CDs. Retinal burns don't hurt while they're happening, which is exactly what makes them dangerous. Spain's consumer body OCU has been warning about counterfeit glasses sold online, so check the printing on whatever you buy.
The one minute of totality is the only time it's safe to look with bare eyes — and we'll tell you exactly when.

The group leaves Cisne by Nest in Sant Antoni de Portmany on foot at 18:00 on Wednesday 12 August 2026. Guests staying at Flamingo by Nest in Es Canar leave earlier, at 15:00, to travel across the island and join the Sant Antoni group before departure.
Can I join if I am not staying at the hostel?
Places go to hostel guests first. If space remains after guests are accounted for, non-guests are welcome to join. Message Cisne by Nest or Flamingo by Nest on WhatsApp to check availability.
Which beach will you watch the eclipse from?
The final location is confirmed a couple of days beforehand based on the cloud forecast. It will be one of the official observation zones reachable on foot from Sant Antoni de Portmany, either Cala Gració or the Sant Antoni coast. Both offer a clear western sea horizon and the longest totality of the six official zones in Ibiza.
How long does totality last in Ibiza?
Between roughly 45 seconds and 1 minute 20 seconds depending where you stand, and longest in the north of the island. At the official zones near Sant Antoni it is about 1 minute 10 seconds, beginning at approximately 20:32 CEST with the Sun only 3 degrees above the horizon.
Are roads to the Ibiza beaches closed during the eclipse?
Vehicle access is restricted at fixed points on the roads to Cala d'Hort at km 4.3, Platges de Comte from km 4.5 of the EI-701, Cala Molí at km 3.6 and Cala Bassa from km 1.9. Traffic control across the island steps up during the day. Reaching a viewing point on foot avoids these restrictions entirely.
Do I need eclipse glasses?
Yes. Glasses must be certified to ISO 12312-2 and marked CE with the reference EN ISO 12312-2:2015. They are required for every phase except the brief period of totality itself. Sunglasses, smoked glass, CDs and phone screens do not provide safe protection at any point.
