The butterfly garden: a paradise in the city
The Butterfly House is an amazing sanctuary dedicated to butterflies in the city of Icod de los Vinos. It’s no surprise that it’s one of the top reasons to visit the city!
Just a stone’s throw away from the museums and the Dragon Park, this sanctuary is the perfect spot to unwind and wrap up your day in peace and tranquility. The vibe in the gardens is just right for a chill afternoon, and you’ll be amazed by the butterfly species you probably didn’t even know existed!
What to see at the Butterfly House?
First, let’s find the butterflies! So many butterflies! In fact, there are over 800 examples. The number isn’t exact, though, since butterflies only live for two to three weeks and can’t stick around the park forever. Luckily, many of them can breed right on-site. You’ll get to appreciate all the stages of a butterfly’s life! If you’re lucky, you might even see a caterpillar emerge from its “cocoon” as a beautiful butterfly. You’ll also get to check out loads of plants, which can be grouped into three different categories:
- Ornamental These are the plants you’ll find in the butterfly garden, just to make everything look even more beautiful together.
- Nectar plants These are the plants that feed the butterflies. Many butterflies sip nectar from flowers, and without these plants, they wouldn’t survive.
- Plants for “guests” These are the plants that allow caterpillars to be born and grow. Not every plant is suitable for this, which is why it’s super important to take care of the flora in a place like the butterfly garden.
One cool thing about the park is how they handle weeds. It’s clear that pesticides aren’t an option for dealing with unwanted guests. In fact, they use special bacteria in the butterfly house to get rid of pesky insects without harming the butterflies.

To get into the park, you’ll need to grab a ticket. It’s just a small fee:
- For adult travelers: €8.50
- For retirees or residents: €7.50
- For kids under 12: € 5.00
Entry is free for kids under 2 years old.
