Masca – Tenerife
If you’re looking for a slice of paradise, you’ve got to check out Masca! Nestled in the breathtaking mountains of Tenerife, this charming little village is like something straight out of a postcard. With its narrow winding roads and stunning views, it’s a total must-see.
You can hike through the lush valleys and rugged cliffs, or just chill out and soak in the vibe. The local eateries serve up some delicious Canarian food, so make sure to grab a bite while you’re there.
Whether you’re snapping pics or just enjoying the scenery, Masca is the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle. Don’t miss it on your Tenerife adventure!
Masca (Tenerife, Canary Islands) and the Masca Valley are a little hidden gem on the island of Tenerife. It’s said that – besides being one of the oldest geographical sites in the world – it’s an isolated paradise where you can soak up nature and the true essence of Tenerife.
The Masca Valley is believed to have formed around 7 million years ago, after the eruptions of Teide shaped the surrounding mountains. Since then, this part of the island has only been home to a tiny village of about 100 people. Its isolation has helped preserve the local culture and nature; it’s this unique situation that lets us explore the island like we’re the original Canarian aborigines.
Since the ’70s, a path has opened up that lets travelers explore the country and connect with nature in a respectful and awe-inspiring way. You can walk this trail, which takes about 3 hours (but honestly, it feels more like a fun routine!), and trust us, what awaits you at the end is totally worth every bit of effort.
Trekking Tenerife – Masca
If you’re looking for an adventure, you can’t miss the trek to Masca! This stunning trail takes you through some of the most breathtaking landscapes Tenerife has to offer. Picture rugged cliffs, lush greenery, and winding paths that lead you to the charming village of Masca, nestled in a beautiful valley.
The trek is a mix of excitement and challenge, so make sure you grab your hiking boots and stay hydrated. Along the way, you’ll spot some unique plants and maybe even a few local critters. And trust us, the views are totally worth it!
Once you reach Masca, take a moment to soak it all in. Grab a bite to eat at a local café and enjoy the vibe of this picturesque spot. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a fun day out, this trek is a must-do on your Tenerife adventure!
Masca sits about 600 meters above sea level, tucked away on the western side of the Teno Mountains. If you’re planning to visit, here are a few tips to make your journey smoother:
Tour Bus in Tenerife There are plenty on the island to organize tours for travelers. If you’re short on time and want to keep it comfy, one of these trips is definitely for you!
Rental Car If you get the chance to rent a car, you can drive to Los Gigantes and then hop in a taxi or bus to start the Trekking route. Of course, you can just take a taxi, but it might cost a bit more!
Boat trip around Tenerife They might not be as common as bus rides, but getting to Masca by boat is definitely an unforgettable experience.
Besides the stunning scenery and nature, once you arrive, you can chill out on a little beach with an amazing view of Los Gigantes.
If you’re not into hitting up the usual “tourist traps,” come stay at one of our Nest hostels! You’ll get to hang out with a local guide on our organized tours!
Masca: What You Don’t Know
The city’s location is perfect for all sorts of activities. It’s one of the best spots for surfing in Tenerife, but there’s so much more! Not everyone knows it, but Masca is amazing for hiking, biking, and climbing.
Of course, it’s not just that—this village is bursting with culture no matter where you look. Here, you can dive into the history of the Guanchi, the native inhabitants of the area. The locals see their home not just as a tourist spot, but more like a “sanctuary” where nature, tradition, and culture thrive. The people of Masca are not only deeply religious, but they also embrace spirituality through practices like witchcraft. Magical rituals involving livestock and celebratory events are still common and are an essential part of local life.
It’s definitely one of the coolest spots on the island of Tenerife. Why not stay at a Nest hostel and dive into a hiking adventure? Masca is waiting for you!
