El Teide – Tenerife
Get ready to be wowed by El Teide, the highest peak in Spain! This stunning volcano is not just a sight to see; it’s a whole adventure waiting for you. Whether you’re hiking up to catch breathtaking views or just chilling in the surrounding national park, you’ll be in awe of the beauty all around. Don’t forget your camera—sunrises and sunsets here are absolutely magical! So, grab your friends and get ready to explore one of Tenerife’s coolest spots!
Teide (Tenerife, Canarias) is, but more than anything, it was one of the highest peaks in the world. In fact, during the European expansion period, this mountain served as a landmark for all sailors heading south. Back then, the Teide was considered the highest mountain in the world. Even though we know that’s not the case today, its cultural and scenic values are still spot on.
This volcano ranks third in the world for height and volume , but that’s only because during its formation, the source-volcano wall gave way, creating the “ Caldera de Las Cañadas .” If that hadn’t happened, this volcanic structure would be even more impressive!
Given its height, Teide’s activity has been pretty chill for the last 20,000 years; instead, the lower peaks have been the real stars, producing most of the eruptions during this time.
The legend of the Tenerife volcano
This story, though, doesn’t even compare to what the locals in Tenerife tell. It’s a tale of demons, the underworld, and the most powerful one.
They say that Guayota, an evil demon, resides in the volcano known as Echeyde or hell. Guayota supposedly kidnapped the god Magec, the god of sun and light.
Because of this, he was trapped in the underworld by Achamán, a supreme god whom the islanders begged to bring back the sun.
And that’s how he “sealed” the activity of Teide; they say the light-colored stone ring at the top is just the cap placed there by Achamán.

But why read about it when you can go and experience it live with excursions in Tenerife? We often have these organized at our Nests!
Trekking Tenerife: climbing Teide
The top of Teide offers a truly priceless view. It’s a climb of 3,718 meters, but trust us, it’s worth it.
For the more adventurous, you can start at Montaña Blanca and tackle the full 6-hour hike, or you can take the cable car close to the summit and then pick the route that suits your vibe best.
At the top of the funicular, you’ve got three options:
Itinerary to the Teide Crater For those who are determined to reach the summit! From the top, you can see the other islands in the archipelago and enjoy an incredible view. To avoid the crowds, you’ll need to get a special permit – it’s not too hard, but you might need a bit of luck to find availability. You can also get the permit online.
Belvedere Route of Fortaleza takes you to a key lookout point to see the northern part of the island. From here, you can soak in all the stunning beauty of nature!
Belvedere “Pico Viejo” Itinerary This viewpoint lets you soak in the stunning southern part of the island and, more importantly, admire the breathtaking Caldera de Las Cañadas of Teide. You can also spot other volcanic craters like Pico Viejo and the twins.
Before you head out, make sure you’re properly geared up. You’ll want to wear good walking shoes, bring trekking poles, pack plenty of water, and layer up with some heavy clothing. Especially if you’re hiking up the mountain, the temperature change from base to peak can be wild!
