Wondering what to do in Tenerife?
The San Juan festivals brought together thousands of locals and tourists across the 7 Canary Islands.
Every year around this time, you’ll find the traditional San Juan parties happening in many places across the Canary Islands. Towns like Puerto de la Cruz, Punta del Hidalgo, Guía de Isora, and Icod de Los Vinos are the spots where you’ll catch all kinds of fun events.
The most magical night is June 23rd, the eve of San Juan, and it’s celebrated with a lot of energy during the Hogueras de San Juan. As night falls, bonfires are lit to welcome the summer solstice. It’s all about letting go of the negative and opening your arms to new and better things.
Families and friends gather around a beach bonfire, where the intense smell of wood and old things creates a magical night, perfect for making wishes.
In Puerto de La Cruz, the San Juan festivities kick off with the traditional setting up of the fountains; then it moves on to bonfires at Playa Jardín and a dip in the sea, wrapping up this Monday, the 24th, with the classic ritual at the pier. The highlight? Animals take center stage, with the traditional bathing of the goats in the port, one of the oldest traditions in the Canaries, organized by the Association of Friends of the Goat Bath in the Sea.
Icod de los Vinos celebrates San Juan in different neighborhoods, featuring bouncy castles, dancing, bonfires, and the popular tradition of “Los Hachitos“. These were originally made from Canarian pine wood and used for lighting up the night, dating back to the indigenous era.
The “Hachos” are these awesome candelabras that stand about two or three meters tall. They’re made from wood and have their ends wrapped with cloth soaked in oil, where they light up the torches. They’re decorated with branches, flowers, and ribbons. When night falls, the bonfires get lit, and the parade kicks off from La Vega to El Amparo, filled with the lively sounds of “tajaraste” music mixed with the joy of the locals.
