During this week, the preliminary rounds and the grand final of the adult murgas are the most anticipated events. Guaranteed laughs for everyone! 😂🎶

Highlighted Events of the Second Week 📅

  • February 10 to 12 (Monday to Wednesday): Preliminaries of Adult Murgas 🎤🎭. Each night, different groups will compete, showcasing their wit and satire at the Fairgrounds.
  • February 14 (Friday): Adult Murgas Final 🎤🎉. The best murgas from the preliminaries will battle it out for the title in a night packed with humor and social critique.
  • February 15 (Saturday): Music Groups Competition 🌟🎶. Various groups will play festive and traditional carnival tunes.
  • February 16 (Sunday): Children’s Queen Election Gala 👑✨. The little candidates will show off their costumes as they compete for the title of the children’s carnival queen.

Meaning and History of the Murgas Murgas are a vibrant part of the Canarian Carnival, known for their catchy tunes and hilarious performances. Originating in the early 20th century, these groups mix music, satire, and humor, often poking fun at social and political issues. The colorful costumes and lively shows create an electric atmosphere that draws both locals and visitors alike. If you get the chance to experience a Murga during Carnival, you’re in for a treat! It’s a celebration of creativity and community that you won’t want to miss.

Murgas are musical-theatrical groups that mix music, singing, dancing, and acting, known for performing choral songs backed by percussion instruments. Their shows usually feature humorous lyrics and social critiques that tackle political and cultural topics.

In Canarias, murgas are a vital part of the carnival scene, especially in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas. These lively groups are known for their satirical and humorous lyrics that tackle social and political issues, reflecting the reality of the islands. The tradition of murgas in Canarias dates back to 1917 when Uruguayan sailors from the “Laya” steamship joined the carnival by forming a chirigota, laying the groundwork for this cultural expression in the archipelago.

Canarian murgas prep all year long, crafting repertoires that mix social critique with entertainment. Their performances are eagerly awaited by the community during the carnival festivities!

Experience the Magic of the Second Week!

Tenerife Carnival isn’t just a party, it’s an experience you’ve gotta live at least once in your life. The second week is perfect for soaking up the most authentic traditions and diving into the carnival spirit. Can’t wait to see you in Tenerife for a week you’ll never forget! 🎭✨

Origins and Evolution

Carnival has its roots in ancient pagan festivals. For instance, the Roman Saturnalia was a year-end celebration filled with gift exchanges, public feasts, and a temporary break from social norms. When Christianity came along, these festivities got a makeover and started to lead up to the 40 days of Lent.

These days, Carnival is all about freedom, inclusion, and identity, bringing people from all over the world together to dress up and celebrate. In many places, like the Dominican Republic, carnivals have deep cultural significance and are tied to important dates of independence and restoration.
