Created by Royal Order of Carlos III in 1788, La Orotava Acclimatisation Gardens are the oldest botanical garden in the Canary Islands. They are also known as Puerto de la Cruz Botanical Garden since years ago Puerto de la Cruz used to belong to the municipality of La Orotava and was known as Puerto de La Orotava.

This majestic garden is one of the best places in North Tenerife to have a walk in the nature because of its major collections of tropical and sub-tropical plants counting over 5000 different plants and 120 tree species.

Wandering among colorful flowers and ancient trees that seem to forge a fairytale setting, such as the imposing Ficus Macrophylla Columnaris, which is one of the main attractions of the park, visitors will marvel at the sight of the incredible variety of plant species, differing in age, size, rarity, and place of origin, that the garden offers.

The Botanical Garden covers about 20,000 square meters and fascinates the great diversity of species from all over the world. The climatic conditions of Tenerife have favored the coexistence of trees whose origins and environmental needs vary greatly. Alongside the indigenous plants, South American plants, Californian palms, bromeliads, succulents, and many other species thrive.

The project of this garden was born with the idea of bringing exotic plants from the New World, America, to the Iberian Peninsula. Tenerife served as an acclimatization center for these plants (that's the reason of the official name) before being transferred to Spain.

The garden was enriched with biodiversity following four large botanical expeditions organized by Spain in the 18th century to the Philippines, Central America, Colombia and Peru.

La Orotava acclimatization garden can be visited all year round and is open every day from 9.00 to 18.00 (on Sundays it closes at 15.00). The entrance price is €3.00.
