It\u2019s literally the carnival chosen by its tourists.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n<h2 id=\"que-hace-unico\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What makes the Gran Canaria carnival so special?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tenerife has the biggest carnival in the Canary Islands. Gran Canaria has four other things, and none of them are across the sea.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"gala-drag\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Drag Gala: the most-watched show of the year in the Canary Islands<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first official Drag Gala in Las Palmas took place in <strong>1998<\/strong>, on a Thursday afternoon at Santa Catalina Park. It was scheduled mid-week so if it flopped, it wouldn&#8217;t be noticed too much. <strong>Drag Heaven<\/strong> took home the crown. A parody funeral procession winds through the city, ending with the burning of a giant sardine on Las Canteras beach, with the Atlantic behind it.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To give you an idea of the scale: in 2026, the parade left from the Club Nataci\u00f3n Metropole and wrapped up at the promenade near Gran Canaria street, with around <strong>25,000 people<\/strong>, a five-meter <strong>wood and cork sardine<\/strong>, and about <strong>270 kilos of fireworks<\/strong>. It arrived almost an hour late, which is another handy tip: here, schedules are just a guideline, and it\u2019s way more fun to enjoy the parade as it goes by than to wait at the finish line.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"mogollones\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The big crowds are no longer at Parque Santa Catalina<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s the info no tourist guide will give you, and it\u2019ll save you from searching for an old photo. The locals around the park fought for years, and in <strong>2015, a court-approved agreement<\/strong> was reached that generally bans big crowds and concerts in Parque Santa Catalina. There are some strict exceptions: only the celebrations at the end of the big galas \u2014 the Queen and the Drag \u2014 are allowed, and they can&#8217;t go past midnight with a sound limit of 60 decibels at the building facades.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What does it mean for you? That <strong>the carnival night in Las Palmas spreads through the Puerto neighborhood<\/strong>, from Santa Catalina to Manuel Becerra, instead of being concentrated in just one square. There\u2019s a community initiative asking to renegotiate the agreement, and the City Council seems open to reviewing it, so we&#8217;ll revisit this in January. If you hop on thinking you\u2019re heading to Playa del Ingl\u00e9s, you\u2019ll end up halfway across the island!<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can get there straight from the airport: the <strong>60<\/strong> line heads up to Las Palmas and the <strong>66<\/strong> goes down to Maspalomas.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The ticket<\/strong> costs around \u20ac6-9 each way; check the current fare at guaguasglobal.com before you travel. If you&#8217;re heading south more than once, the <strong>TransGC<\/strong> card gives you a discount on top-ups between 20% and 40% depending on the amount, with a minimum of \u20ac15.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>And now for the honest part, which almost nobody shares: the late-night return.<\/strong> On a regular day, there\u2019s no public bus running from the south between <strong>11:00 PM and 3:33 AM<\/strong>. During the big carnival nights in Maspalomas, Global sets up a <strong>special night service<\/strong> from San Fernando (Avenida de Tirajana) to San Telmo, which in 2026 operated from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
