Created by Royal Order of Carlos III in 1788, La Orotava Acclimatisation Gardens<\/strong> are the oldest botanical garden in the Canary Islands. They\u2019re also known as Puerto de la Cruz Botanical Garden since years ago Puerto de la Cruz <\/a>used to belong to the municipality of La Orotava and was known as Puerto de La Orotava.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

This amazing garden is one of the best spots in North Tenerife to take a stroll in nature. You’ll find a huge collection of tropical and sub-tropical plants with over 5,000 different plants and 120 tree species<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n

The Botanical Garden spans around 20,000 square meters<\/strong> and showcases an incredible variety of species from all over the globe. Tenerife’s climate is perfect for a mix of trees with different origins and needs. You\u2019ll find not just the local plants, but also South American species, Californian palms, bromeliads, succulents<\/strong>, and so many other cool plants thriving here.<\/p>\n\n

This garden project kicked off with the goal of bringing exotic plants from the New World, America, to the Iberian Peninsula. Tenerife acted as a cool acclimatization hub<\/strong> for these plants (that\u2019s why it has this official name) before they made their way to Spain.<\/p>\n\n

The garden got a serious upgrade in biodiversity thanks to four big botanical expeditions Spain kicked off in the 18th century, exploring the Philippines, Central America, Colombia, and Peru. How cool is that?<\/p>\n\n

You can check out the La Orotava acclimatization garden any time of year! It’s open every day from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (and closes at 3:00 PM on Sundays). Entry costs just \u20ac3.00.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n
