Tenerife - The pyramids of the island

In the southeast of Tenerife, about 24 km from Santa Cruz, in the municipality of Guimar, lies one of the mysteries surrounding this marvellous island: the pyramids, in fact, of Guimar.

In front of these mysterious buildings, those who think that Tenerife is only beaches, sun, sea and nightlife, can only think again: these imposing buildings represent a real dilemma even for the most experienced scholars.

The pyramids, staggered and numbering six in number, are astronomically oriented to cast a cone of shadow during the summer and winter solstices, were built of worked lava stones and are similar in appearance to those found in Egypt, Mesopotamia and, above all, Latin America.

The pyramid park of Tenerife

Whatever the origin of the pyramids, there is no doubt that they are truly fascinating constructions. Visiting them is definitely worthwhile, also because they are located in what is now an ethnographic park.

The park, in addition to being the archaeological site of the pyramids, houses a museum, a navigation room, an auditorium, a restaurant and a bar. The museum contains interesting evidence of the links between the Americas and Europe before Columbus, and the auditorium shows quarter-hour films illustrating Heyerdsal's theories.

How to visit the park

If you intend to visit the ethnographic park, you have two types of ticket:

• Standard. Includes the following areas: Museum of the Guimar pyramid, documentary, expedition room, sustainable garden, outdoor itineraries including the pyramids and the botanical garden divided into four thematic areas.

• Premium. Includes all the activities of the standard ticket plus the poison garden and the exhibitions "Colonizing Polynesia" and "Rapa Nui, extreme survival".

The park is open daily from 9.30 am to 6 pm.
